Our High School program provides a unique opportunity for students to learn adaptive skills i.e. “…the ability to apply meaningfully-learned knowledge and skills flexibly and creatively in different situations.” (de Corte, 2010, pp. 45), while additionally focusing on the performance-driven aspects of learning required for access to post-secondary programs. Our school operates on a semester system; except for year-long mathematics, English, and physical education courses.
Classes are either 40 or 80 minutes long, and the day runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with an optional Study Hall period available from 3:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for students to catch up, connect with their teachers, or work independently towards completing assignments.
Students benefit from highly knowledgeable, intelligent, and dynamic teachers who, rather than merely lecture, present information as an interactive dialogue. Classes are all taught in small groups to ensure that no student’s question goes unanswered and that no voice goes unheard.
In addition to classroom learning, students participate in a variety of enriching and engaging activities that support comprehension building and memory retention. These activities include frequent field trips, guest speakers, dance, music, peer-to-peer discussion and debate, team-based community activities, and self-directed study.
